For me entrepreneurship is a deeply personal endeavour. I feel it to be especially true for founder-CEOs who like myself must believe in their companies above anything else.
As a mother of three daughters I can honestly say that a business is not terribly different from parenting, in that thousands of hours are spent nurturing children and helping them to grow. In both the result is a strong attachment; in business, the attachment is inherent in every step of the building process.
This is where problems sometimes arise — it's so easy to fall into the trap of overdoing it, since capital in the early days is tight.
Even when on vacation when I manage to get away, it can take more then a day to let go. It's very difficult. Even though I'm more than aware and understand that one of the biggest secrets of productivity — is the refuelling principle.
It comes down to this: I get much more done when I step back and recharge my brain and body. I have seen the studies that show how performance increases after breaks of all durations: from extended vacations down to microbreaks of 30 seconds. (I've got the microbreaks down. Baby steps right?) For now I am at least taking my evenings off — which ishuge!
I've decided to take it one day at a time — as too many people have great advice on how I should let go, how I can disconnect. Even expert advice is just that:advice. The same goes for parenting advice. I've learnt over the years that when I listen to my instincts I rarely go in the wrong direction — needless to say is there ever really awrong direction? As failure is an opportunity to grow, an invitation to start over.
Now time for a micro break swim for my brain & body!
Cheers from Holbox Island Mexico,
